17th Annual Conference of the European Society of Criminology
Description:
The European Society of Criminology will be organizing their last ESC conference in the UK before Brexit: at Cardiff University 13-16 September 2017. Its theme is Challenging ‘Crime’ and ‘Crime Control’ in Contemporary Europe. The theme of the conference explores four key challenges for ‘crime’ and ‘crime control’ as phenomena and criminology as a discipline: The rise in intolerance of longer-established but often termed ‘new’ crimes such as domestic and commercial violence against women and men (aspects of which are now badged as ‘modern slavery’). The changes in technologies which (alongside other influences) have impacted on the police-recorded and real rates of some more traditional crimes, requiring a shift in focus, in crime measurement and in public & private ‘plural policing’, as well as on personal transparency to commerce, to other internet users, and to domestic and foreign governments. The simultaneous localisation and globalisation of ‘terrorist threats’, which have generated a shift in securitisation, growing monitoring/restrictions on civil liberties and a closer relationship between the police and security services in European countries and elsewhere. The impact of austerity and public finances on levels of crime and on how we react to crimes, including policing, criminal justice and the sanctioning of offenders. 2017 Presidential Summit & Seminar "Race Matters: The Impact on Criminal Justice
Description:
NACDL's Presidential Summit & Seminar: "Race Matters: The Impact of Race on Criminal Justice" will be held at the Greektown Hotel, Detroit, MI September 14-15, 2017. Race Matters in our criminal justice system. It affects what happens from initial contact with police on the street, to the end of the case and everything in between. As part of being effective advocates for our clients, criminal defense lawyers face the challenge of confronting the difficult issues presented by race in America. This inaugural Presidential Summit is designed to help practitioners identify and confront issues of Racial Bias in our courts, the law enforcement community, by prosecutors, and yes, even the defense team. Attendees will hear from trial lawyers, academics, and formerly incarcerated individuals who will offer their personal perspectives, strategies, and ideas on why Race Matters. Participants will leave with both a greater understanding of the issues and innovative tools to apply this knowledge. This program has been created to intentionally challenge you to push the envelope on your understanding of and willingness to attack racial bias in the criminal justice system. 2017 White Collar Seminar "Defending the White Collar Case: In & Out of Court"
Description:
NACDL's 13th Annual White Collar Seminar will be held at the Almas Temple (part of Hamilton Crowne Plaza hotel) in Washington, DC, September 14-15, 2017. Program Summary: With nearly 5,000 federal criminal offenses, and hundreds of thousands of regulations that can be punished criminally, the power of the federal prosecutor has never been stronger. Many of these offenses are vague on their face, others can be stretched beyond recognition, and nearly all are connected to the ever-increasing Sentencing Guidelines. Prosecutors are armed with broad charging discretion, and discovery rules that consistently favor the government. For those accused of white collar crime, this is their reality. It is for all these reasons that, thirteen years ago, NACDL’s Defending the White Collar Case: In And Out of Court Seminar was created. Each year the white collar defense bar gathers to learn from each other, to improve their skills, and to ensure they are well-positioned to provide their clients the best defense possible. The power of prosecutors is great, but this defense revival meeting is even greater.
